FITZ4JAX CHILDREN’S CIVIC-LEARNING COLLECTION

Learn How Your City Works

Illustrated cover for Learn How Your City Works, a FITZ4JAX children’s civic-learning story

Chapter 1

Sofia wondered who fixed potholes, planned parks, answered emergencies, and decided how city money was spent. Her class created a Jacksonville question wall and began matching each question with the department or public body responsible.

Chapter 2

They learned that the mayor leads the executive branch, the City Council passes laws and budgets, independent agencies have their own duties, and public employees deliver many everyday services. No single official can lawfully do everything alone.

Chapter 3

The class opened a simple city budget chart. They compared proposed spending, recurring costs, grants, debt, reserves, and capital projects. Numbers became easier to understand when the students asked what result each dollar was supposed to produce.

Chapter 4

At a mock public meeting, students practiced giving short, respectful comments. They supported their ideas with observations and asked how progress would be measured. Disagreement did not make anyone an enemy.

Chapter 5

They also learned to verify information through official records and reliable reporting. A dramatic claim could spread quickly, but responsible citizens checked the source, date, jurisdiction, and evidence before repeating it.

Chapter 6

Your city belongs to everyone, and civic responsibility grows through knowledge. Learn how decisions are made, ask careful questions, vote when you are eligible, and help your neighbors participate with respect.
