A PUBLIC-HEALTH COMMITMENT

A 12-step framework to help prevent suicide

Government cannot promise to eliminate every suicide. It can help build a stronger prevention system, reduce isolation, connect people with qualified care and treat every life as valuable.

1

Make 988 visible

Place clear call, text and chat information in city buildings, youth spaces, libraries, partner venues and campaign resources.

2

Build a coordinated crisis pathway

Convene hospitals, behavioral-health providers, 911, 988, first responders and community organizations to clarify handoffs and reduce gaps.

3

Support veteran peer navigation

Partner with qualified veteran organizations and trained peers who understand military culture, benefits and the difficulty of asking for help.

4

Create teen listening points

Work with schools, libraries, parks and youth organizations—within lawful city authority—to create welcoming referral and mentoring pathways.

5

Train trusted community connectors

Offer evidence-informed gatekeeper education for coaches, clergy, employers, parents and volunteers on warning signs and appropriate referral.

6

Strengthen follow-up after crisis

Encourage coordinated caring contacts and warm handoffs after emergency care, with privacy, consent and clinical standards protected.

7

Promote safer environments

Support responsible lethal-means safety education, secure-storage information and site-specific safety reviews led by qualified professionals.

8

Address pressures around the crisis

Connect residents to housing, food, employment, transportation, disability and legal-service referrals because stability can strengthen protection.

9

Care for first responders

Expand awareness of confidential, culturally competent support for police, fire, EMS, dispatchers and their families.

10

Respond safely after a loss

Use expert postvention guidance, protect family privacy, avoid sensational messaging and offer support to affected schools, workplaces and neighborhoods.

11

Publish responsible progress measures

Report service availability, training reach and system performance without exposing personal information or oversimplifying complex outcomes.

12

Keep community connection open

Use sports, arts, veterans centers, parks and a proposed performing arts center to create regular places where people belong, participate and build relationships.

TO JACKSONVILLE TEENS

We will listen. You matter.

You do not have to have everything figured out. Asking for help is not weakness. Our youth agenda supports safe recreation, sports, arts, mentoring, job preparation, civic learning and clear pathways to qualified mental-health support. We will invite teens into conversations that affect their future and take their concerns seriously.

MOVE FOR HEALTH

Why exercise belongs in the priorities

Regular movement can support physical health, sleep, stress management, social connection and confidence. That can mean walking, adaptive exercise, swimming, dancing, basketball or supervised strength training. Residents should choose activities suited to their health and consult a professional when needed.

CARE FOR YOUR APPEARANCE

Looking cared for can feel good

Self-care may include clean clothes, skincare, a fresh haircut, braids, locs or a beautiful weave. Hair and style are personal and cultural expressions—not measures of a person’s worth. The goal is dignity, comfort and confidence without judging anyone’s budget, body or choices.

WORDS THAT MAKE US SMILE

Honeyfuggler and knocker-upper

Honeyfuggler

An old-fashioned word for someone who flatters or sweet-talks for a selfish purpose. Today it works best as a harmless vocabulary joke—not a label for attacking real people.

Knocker-upper

A historical worker who knocked on windows or doors to wake customers before alarm clocks became common. It sounds mischievous now, but it was once a real morning job.

Humor can release tension and bring people together. Good humor avoids humiliation, respects mental health and leaves neighbors laughing with one another—not at one another.
